What is Medical Transcription?

Medical transcription is the process of converting voice-recorded reports as dictated by physicians and/or other healthcare professionals into text format.

Who will do Medical Transcription?

The person who transcribes the voice-recorded reports is Medical Transcriptionist (MT). India has become the hub of the global MT industry.

Skills needed for a Medical Transcriptionist

  1. Good Typing Skill
  2. Basic computer skill (Introduction, Windows XP, MS-Office 2003 and other MT-related software tools)
  3. Good English skill (Grammar, Comprehension, Spelling, Communication, Verbal and Written knowledge)
  4. Knowledge of medical terminology (Mostly the company who recruits MT will be giving required training)

  2. Language of Medicine – Training in human anatomy, physiology and medical terminology pertaining to each system in the human body.
  3. Transcription – Practice to transcribe all the system-related voice files (Beginners and Advance Medical Transcription voice files, Formatting, Transcription rules etc.)

  1. Patient sees doctor
  2. Doctor dictates into microphone
  3. Voice captured on system
  4. File sent to medical transcriptionist
  5. File is transcribed
  6. Uploaded to hospital/filed for patient
  7. Coder codes the document from the transcribed report
  8. Biller bills the visit from the coded document
  9. Insurance and patient are billed
  10. Completed documents are filed for patient
